The Central Connecticut lacrosse team fell to Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon by a score of 14-8. The game was the Northeast Conference opener for both squads. The loss drops the Blue Devils to 0-1 in NEC play and 5-3 on the season. Quinnipiac improves to 2-3 and 1-0 in the NEC. Central was led by three goals from sophomore Betsy Vendel.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead against the Bobcats. Senior Michele Conway passed to Vendel for the opening goal of the game less than two minutes into play. Two minutes later sophomores Meaghan McCurry and Mackenzy Ryan teamed up for a goal. Ryan found the back of the net making it a 2-0 game. Ryan scored again to make it 3-0, this time she recorded the goal unassisted.
Laura Iannotti scored for Quinnipiac making it a 3-1 game, but junior Ashley Perkoski scored unassisted to make it a 4-1 game.
Quinnipiac took over the game from that point scoring three unanswered goals to close out the half. The Bobcats opened the second half in the same fashion as they scored nine times and allowed Central only one goal. The Blue Devil goals was an unassisted score by Vendel, her second of the game.
The Bobcats 12-1 run put the Blue Devils in a deep hole, but Central battled back as junior Cara Momnie, junior Ashley Mara and Vendel all scored in the final minutes to make it a 14-8 game.
Junior goalie Erin DeLancey had seven saves for the Blue Devils. Her record falls to 5-3 with the loss.
The Blue Devils return to action on Friday when they host Monmouth at Arute Field.
