The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team fell to Sacred Heart on senior day at Arute Field. The Blue Devils allowed four goals late in the second half to fall to the Pioneers by a score of 11-10. The loss drops the Blue Devils to 6-7 on the season and 1-5 in Northeast Conference play. Senior Michele Conway scored three goals and moved into second all-time on CCSU's career goals list.
The Blue Devils and Pioneers went to the half tied at five. The teams traded goals early in the first half keeping the game knotted at 7-7 with 19:00 minutes left to play.
Central scored the next three goals building a 10-7 lead. Conway scored her third goal of the game on an assist from sophomore Betsy Vendel, making it 8-7. The senior Lyndsey Mastandrea and sophomore Meaghan McCurry followed with unassisted goals stretching the lead to three with 13 minutes left in the game.
The Pioneers still had a run left in them as they scored four straight goals to rally for the 11-10 lead. Sacred Heart controlled the draw following their final goal and was able to run two minutes and 20 seconds off of the clock before the Blue Devils had a final chance to score.
With 11 seconds remaining Vendel forced a turnover, Conway picked up the loose ball and ran down the center of the field. Conway passed ahead to Mastandrea who was one-on-one with the goalie. Mastandrea shot came with less than three seconds on the clock, but the Sacred Heart keeper made a brilliant body save and scooped up the ball to run out the clock.
Conway and McCurry each finished with three goals in the game. Conway's second goal put her into second place on the Blue Devils career goals list. She finished the game with 94 goals for her career.
The Blue Devils return to action on Thursday night at Bryant. They then travel to Wagner and Long Island to close out the season.
