Central Connecticut women's lacrosse sophomore Morgan Tullar and freshman Madison Hughes were honored with weekly awards from the Northeast Conference on Monday afternoon. Tullar was named NEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week and Hughes was named NEC Rookie of the Week for their performance in CCSU's two victories last week.
The NEC Defensive Player of the Week honor is the third this season for Tullar. She earned two wins last week, against Saint Francis U (12-9) and Robert Morris (14-7), boasting a .515 save percentage and making a combined 17 saves, with 13 of them coming against RMU.
She was clutch in the second half of both games, helping the Blue Devil defense hold the Red Flash to four goals and the Colonials to two. She also collected seven ground balls and caused two turnovers for the week.
Hughes combined for five goals, three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers over the two victories to earn her first NEC weekly honor. Against the Red Flash, Hughes netted three goals, including the game-winner, and pocketed two ground balls.
She then scored two more goals, recorded two draw controls and two caused turnovers in addition to nabbing one ground ball at RMU. For the weekend, she averaged 2.5 goals per game. Hughes has scored in three straight games for the Blue Devils.
The victories over Saint Francis and Robert Morris have CCSU off to a 2-0 start in NEC play for the second straight season. Last year the Blue Devils started the conference schedule with a program best 3-0 record.
The Blue Devils host Manhattan at Arute Field on Tuesday at 4 p.m., Sacred Heart on Thursday at 4 p.m. and Quinnipiac on Saturday at 1 p.m. Admission to all CCSU lacrosse games at Arute Field is free and fans can also watch all lacrosse home games free of charge on NECFrontRow.com.
