The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference tilt at American, 12-9, on Wednesday afternoon at Jacobs Field in Washington, DC. Freshman Megan Szawlowski tallied three goals and three assists to lead the Blue Devils' offense.
The Eagles led throughout to improve to 2-5 on the season, while CCSU slipped to 1-5 on the year.
American opened the scoring with a pair of goalsto lead 2-0 before Szawlowski converted a free position shot to get CCSU on the board at the 20:39 mark.
The Eagles would build a 6-1 lead midway through the opening period. The Blue Devils cut the deficit in half with back-to-back goals, the first coming from Giangarra off a feed from freshman Morgan Sinton. Soto followed with a goal coming off a pass from Szawlowski to get CCSU within 6-3.
AU would score three straight goals before Soto and Szawlowski connected for another goal to get Central within 9-4 just before halftime.
CCSU would score three quick goals in the second half to get within two goals. Giangarra scored off a solo effort with 29:08 to play. Soto scored her third goal of the day off a pass from Szawlowski to make it 9-6. Szawlowski would get a goal off a pass from Giangarra to make it 9-7 with 26:31 to play.
The Eagles would stem the Blue Devils' run with a goal with 16:09 to play, before Central would score consecutive goals to get within one goal. Szawlowski took a pass from junior Kylie Sullivan with 10:07 to play before freshman Kristen Baumer scored her first career goal with 8:19 remaining to make it 10-9.
American would hold CCSU scoreless from there to end the rally and tacked on two goals for the final margin.
Central is slated to return to action on Friday, March 17, with a 7:00 p.m. contest at La Salle.
