Rachel Caneen Scores Twice; Blue Devils Fall 3-2 in Double Overtime at Yale

Junior Rachel Caneen scored twice but it wasn't enough as the Central Connecticut women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 double overtime decision at Yale on Wednesday night in New Haven. Caneen's goal in the 85th minute tied the game 2-2 but a penalty kick goal in the second overtime gave the Bulldogs the win. With the loss the Blue Devils are now 9-6-4 on the season. CCSU returns to action on Sunday at Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. in its regular season finale.

Caneen's first goal gave the Blue Devils the 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of play in the first half. She took a pass from classmate Leah Blayney just 5:46 into the game to give the visitors the one goal edge. She beat the Yale keeper to the low far corner of the net for her team-best ninth goal of the season.

The Blue Devils held the 1-0 lead until the 71st minute when Yale's Becky Brown put the home team on the board and tied the game. Brown beat Blue Devil junior goalkeeper Caity Casey, who had stopped the first three Bulldog shots she had seen on the night.

Yale took a 2-1 lead under three minutes later at 74:22 on a goal by Maggie Westfal. Westfal, who had assisted on the earlier goal, beat Casey with a one-on-one move and put the ball into the right corner of the net.

Caneen scored her second goal of the game, her 10th of the season, in the 85th minute to tie the game at 2-2. She shot from the right side of the goal, 15 yards out, and beat the keeper to the left corner of the goal. It marked the third multi-goal game of the season for Caneen. The goal was the 22nd of her career, she is fifth all-time at CCSU in that category.

Neither team would find the back of the net in the final four minutes of play and it went to overtime. Neither team registered a shot on goal in the first overtime and the Blue Devils had the first shot in the second overtime but it missed high.

The Bulldogs won the game on a penalty kick goal by Natalia Mann at 106:52 following a CCSU foul call in the box.

Yale entered the game ranked eighth in the Northeast Region, they are now 8-5-2 record. They were 5-1-1 at home before Wednesday's game.

The Blue Devils return to action on Sunday in their regular season finale at Quinnipiac beginning at 1 p.m.
