Women's Soccer Wins 4-2 at Sacred Heart to Remain Undefeated in League Action

Senior Leah Blayney scored twice as the Central Connecticut State University women's soccer team topped Sacred Heart 4-2 on Friday night in Fairfield. With the win the Blue Devils improve to 5-6-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Northeast Conference play. Central trailed 2-1 just after halftime but three second half goals and a strong outing from senior keeper Caity Casey kept CCSU unbeaten in league action. They play again on Sunday at Fairleigh Dickinson.

Blayney's first goal of the game gave CCSU a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute of the first half. She took a free kick and sailed it into the top left corner of the goal for the first score of the night.

Sacred Heart scored two straight goals to take a 2-1 lead. The first came at 38:24 from Jen Mulvey and sent the teams to the break tied at 1-1. The second came under four minutes into the second half. Amanda Stiles took a cross from teammate Samantha Kee and beat Casey for the one goal lead for the home team.

The Blue Devils responded in a big way, scoring three straight goals to win the game 4-2. Karise Hilt took a rebound off a Blayney shot and scored her first goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2 at 64:12.

Less than two minutes later Blayney's second goal of the match gave CCSU the 3-2 lead. She took a pass from teammate Lauren Salvia and beat Pioneer goalkeeper Meghan Reichelt with her seventh goal of the season.

Junior Beth Lloyd scored her fourth goal in the last five games, and her fourth goal of the season, to make it 4-2 in favor of the visitors. At 80:50 Lloyd took a long pass from Hilt and scored from 18 feet for the final goal of the night.

CCSU outshot Sacred Heart 17-11 on the night, including 11-5 in the second half. They held a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Casey made five saves in goal for the victory, her fifth of the season. Central remains undefeated in league play with a 3-0 record. They play at Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday.
