Senior goalkeeper Caity Casey and classmate Leah
Blayney were named the adidas/Northeast Conference Player and
Defender of the Week, it was announced on Monday. The Blue Devils,
7-0-1 in NEC action this season, qualified for the 2009 NEC
Tournament with a pair of victories over the weekend. CCSU is
7-1-1 in its last nine games and 9-6-2 overall this season. They
play again at home on Friday hosting St. Francis (PA) at 3 p.m.
Blayney garners adidas/NEC Player of the Week honors as she helped lead the Blue Devils to a 2-0 week and a 7-0-1 mark in Northeast Conference play this season. She posted a goal and two assists on the week as the Blue Devils qualified for the NEC Tournament with the victory over Mount St. Mary's on Sunday.
On Friday, in a showdown for first place in the NEC, Blayney assisted on the only goal of the game as CCSU topped Monmouth 1-0. On Sunday, she scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season, and assisted on another, as Central topped the Mount 3-1. It was their seventh win in the last nine games (7-1-1). Blayney leads the Blue Devils with eight goals, 10 assists and 26 points. This selection is her first of the 2009 campaign. She is the top scorer in the league.
Casey earns adidas/NEC Defensive Player of the Week for playing her biggest game of the season on Friday as the Blue Devils topped Monmouth to gain sole possession of first place in the Northeast Conference. Casey had 11 saves in the 1-0 shutout victory on Friday afternoon to lead Central to the win. She made an impressive seven saves in the second half alone as the Blue Devils held on for the road victory.
On Sunday, in a 3-1 win over Mount St. Mary's, Casey did not allow a goal in 76:33 of action. She made three saves before coming out of the game. She has not allowed a goal in her last 185:36 minutes played and has four shutouts on the year. This is her first honor in 2009.
