Women Drop 1-0 Decision on Senior Day

Long Island scored with under two minutes to play in the first overtime, as the Central Connecticut women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at home to the Blackbirds on Sunday.  The loss drops Central to 4-5-5 overall and 1-3-3 in Northeast Conference play.

With the win Long Island is 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the NEC.

In overtime, with just under 1:30 left, Ariana Calderon sent a pass into the middle of the box, in front of Central keeper Nikola Deiter.  Teammate Jen Spicer fought off the CCSU defense and put the ball just by Deiter into the lower right corner of the net for the game-winner.

Both teams had several chances throughout the game, but Deiter and Blackbird keeper Jennifer Bannon each made several great stops to keep the game scoreless in regulation.

Bannon recorded seven saves, and the Blackbirds had one as a team, to record her fifth win of the season.

Deiter finished the game with five saves for CCSU, including one in each half on diving stops in front of the goal.  She allowed only one goal in a 1-1-0 weekend for the Blue Devils in over 185 minutes of action.

The Blue Devils had an 8-6 edge in shots on goal in the game, but dropped to 1-3-3 in NEC play with the overtime loss.  It was the seventh overtime game of the season for CCSU, and just the first loss in extra time (1-5-1).

The Blue Devils held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Prior to the match the Blue Devils honored their two seniors, playing in their next-to-last home contest.  Seniors Jillian Cipriano and Brittany Jackson were joined by their families on the field prior to the game.

Cipriano has played in over 70 matches in her four seasons and is the President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee for CCSU.  Jackson is a captain this season and has three goals on the year.  The loss at home was just the fourth for the pair in 28 career home matches.

Central returns to action next Friday on the road at Mount St. Mary's at 4 p.m.
