Women's Soccer Shuts Out Sacred Heart

The Central Connecticut women's soccer team posted a 2-0 shutout victory at home over Sacred Heart on Friday, winning their second Northeast Conference game of the season.  Sophomore goalkeeper Nicki Turley posted her fourth shutout of the season in the victory.

With the win the Blue Devils are now 7-4-3 overall and 2-1-1 in NEC action.  Sacred Heart falls to 6-7-2 overall and 1-2-1 league play.

The two teams played a scoreless first half with neither having a true chance to put a goal on the scoreboard.  Central held a slim 3-1 edge in shots and had the only shot on goal before halftime.

Senior Danica Foglio put the Blue Devils on the board with her second goal of the season with 30:30 left in the second half.  The Blue Devils had controlled play for the first 15 minutes, and missed on a pair of earlier scoring opportunities.  Senior Tori Sousa controlled the ball down the left side of the field, but when she crossed in front of the goal it was poked away by a Sacred Heart defender.  Foglio took the loose ball, from nearly 30 yards out, and fired a strike to the lower left corner of the goal to give the Blue Devils the 1-0 lead.

Central added its second goal on a beautiful corner kick from sophomore Kelly Halligan to freshman Jennifer Cafferky.  The goal was the first for Cafferky and it came with just over two minutes left to play in the game.

The Blue Devils held a 12-3 overall edge in shots, including 6-1 in shots on goal.  They had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Turley made one save in the shutout win.  It was her sixth victory of the season.

Central returns to action on the road on Sunday at Wagner at 1 p.m.
