Central Connecticut women's soccer defender Jennifer Cafferky was named NEC Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday. Cafferky and the Blue Devils went 2-1 this past week. They defeated Yale on Monday night and Sacred Heart on Friday night at home before dropping a 1-0 contest on the road at Wagner on Sunday.
Cafferky was recognized for a strong performance in Friday nights matchup against NEC foe Sacred Heart where she recorded her first career goal as a Blue Devil. She also provided stability in the back four of CCSU's defense throughout the entire week.
The 5-10 rookie from Boras, Sweden solidified a Blue Devil victory on Friday night against the Sacred Heart Pioneers. With under three minutes to play in the match and the Blue Devils leading 1-0, sophomore Kelly Halligan sent a corner kick into the box. Cafferky was able to square the ball on her head and direct it on target to beat the SHU keeper and give the Blue Devils a 2-0 advantage. The goal also marks the first points of her career.
CCSU now sits 7-5-3 overall and 2-2-1 in Northeast Conference play.
The Blue Devils will return to action on Friday night, at home, against Bryant. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and fans not in attendance can watch the action live, for free, on NECFrontRow.com.
