Two Second Half Goals Spark Women's Soccer Past Vermont

Two Second Half Goals Spark Women's Soccer Past Vermont

The Central Connecticut women's soccer collected its third win of it's 2017 non-conference slate on Friday night with a 2-0 victory over the visiting Vermont Catamounts. The win marks the first time CCSU has defeated Vermont in program history. The Blue Devils sealed the win with two second half goals from junior Charlotte Maurer and senior Kelly Halligan

In the first minute out of the halftime gate, junior Yo Tachibana landed a perfectly placed corner kick into the box for Maurer who headed in the Blue Devils first goal (Watch it here). Fueled by the momentum, Halligan broke away from the Catamounts midline and rocketed in the second goal for Central 10 minutes later (Watch it here). The veteran from Lymm, England led the Central attack with three shots on goal.

The Blue Devils improve to 3-4 on the season after Friday night's win. UVM falls to 4-3-1 overall.

Vermont was dominated on the offensive end as CCSU out-shot the Burlington crew 16-1 on the night. Senior captain and three-time NEC Defender of the Year, Jennifer Cafferky returned to the starting lineup today after missing the past two games, and anchored the Blue Devil back line in a strong defensive effort that allowed the Catamounts just one corner the entire match.

Junior keeper Ashley Cavanaugh earned her third shutout of the year and increases her record to  3-3.

The CCSU women's soccer team will head to Providence, RI on Sunday, September 17 to play Brown at 3:00 p.m. on Stevenson-Pincince Field.
