The Central Connecticut women's soccer team out-shot the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers 24-12, including a handful of well-placed attempts at goal, but was unable to match point in a 1-0 loss on Sunday, Oct. 1 at Waldron Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, MD. Leading the offensive brigade was juniors Danielle Pearse and Charlotte Maurer who tallied four shots apeice.
CCSU falls to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in the NEC. The Mountaineers improve to 4-7-1 and 1-1 against conference opponents.
The Blue Devils had no difficulty keeping possession in the scoreless first half, firing off 13 shots to a mere four for the Maryland club.
In the game's 64th minute the Mountaineers found the back of the net on a header from Chloe Cain. The Mount's Jenna West administered the assist. Looking for an answer, in the 73rd minute of action Pearse almost tied up the score on a header that floated about a yard wide of the post.
Junior Ashley Cavanaugh recorded a season high eight saves in the loss and now holds a record of 4-6. Senior Jennifer Cafferky and freshman Jenna Rae Covello added three strikes each. CCSU also held a slight 9-7 advantage in corners on the afternoon.
The Blue Devils will complete their three-game road series next Sunday, Oct. 8 at in-state foe Sacred Heart. The match is slated to start at noon at Park Ave Field in Fairfield, CT.
