The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team finished second at the 2012 Northeast Conference Championships, but the Blue Devils one point defeat did not keep the team from being recognized as one of the top mid-major programs by CollegeSwimming.com.
Head coach Bill Ball's squad fell just short of the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Top-25 in the final poll of 2012. The Blue Devil swimmers and divers received 226.33 points from the poll's voters, a number that put Central outside of the top-25 by just 20 points.
The Blue Devils rank 41st in the poll, which is the highest finish for an NEC team this season. Wagner (220.15), St. Francis (PA) (201.8), Mount St. Mary's (200.44) and Bryant (196.34) were also recognized in the voting.
Ohio University claimed the top spot in the poll, followed by James Madison and Buffalo. Harvard and San Jose State completed the top-5 and Miami (OH), Towson, Princeton, North Texas and Denver filled the top-10.
The Blue Devils posted an impressive 10 All-NEC selections in 2012. With seniors Madison Vestergaard and Alex Czaplicki each earning a pair of first team selections and junior Taylor Friedmann earning a single position.
Vestergaard anchored the Blue Devil diving staff by sweeping the one and three-meter boards at the NEC Championships. For her performance she was named Outstanding Diver of the Meet and her coach, Dave Malier, earned NEC Diving Coach of the Year honors.
