Freshmen Amanda Kelley and Christie Leverette combined for nine top ten finishes as the Central Connecticut women's track and field team competed at the Yale Springtime Meet on Sunday. Kelley placed in all four throwing events, while Leverette spread out her top performances between two jumps, two throws and a track event. The duo took first and second in the javelin throw. Kelley won the event, recording a distance of 36.37 meters, while Leverette was second with a mark of 33.7 meters.
Kelley placed fourth in the discus, recording a mark of 37.94 meters, and was eighth in both the shot put (11.96 meters) and hammer throw (43.09 meters). Leverette was right behind Kelley in the shot, placing 10th with a throw of 10.84 meters. The Dallas, GA native tied for second in the high jump, recording a height of 1.6 meters, and took fifth in the long jump (5.29 meters). Leverette also placed seventh in the 100 meter hurdles, crossing the line in 15.75 seconds.
Senior Megan Jaswell was the only other Blue Devil to place in the top ten on the track. She finished fourth in the 1,500 meters, recording a time of 4:51.26. Freshman Amanda Prescott and junior Samantha Binette also performed well in the field. Prescott took sixth in the triple jump (10.48 meters) and seventh in the high jump (1.45 meters), while Binette was eighth in the long jump recording a mark of 5.08 meters.
Freshman Meghann Cocca set a personal best in the 100
meters. She placed ninth in the event, crossing the line in 12.85
seconds. The CCSU 4x400 meter relay team of Kendra
Smith, Kathleen Lima, Leverette and Kim
Savino placed fourth in a time of 4:13.66. Binette, Cocca,
Leverette and Shamone Allien took seventh in the 4x100 meter
relay, timing in at 50.54 seconds.
CCSU will now be preparing for the Northeast Conference
Championships on May 2-3 in Holmdel, NJ.
