The Central Connecticut women's indoor track & field team
was selected 10th out of 12 teams in the Northeast Conference
Preseason Coaches' Poll, released today. 10th is exactly where the
Blue Devils finished at last season's NEC Indoor Track & Field
Championships.
Monmouth, last year's NEC Champion, was selected to finish
first by the coaches for the sixth year in a row and received nine
out of 12 first place votes. Long Island, runners-up a season ago,
picked up two first place votes and was second in the poll. Sacred
Heart received the final first place vote and finished just behind
the Blackbirds in the vote, placing third.
Mount St. Mary's and St. Francis (PA) rounded out the top five
in the poll, while Robert Morris, Quinnipiac, Fairleigh Dickinson
and Wagner represented the six through nine spots. The Blue Devils
were next, beating out Bryant and St. Francis (NY), who finished
11th and 12th, respectively.
The Blue Devils' return three top 10 performers from last
season's NEC Indoor Track & Field Championships, including
sophomore Amanda Kelley who placed in
both throwing events. Kelley took third in last year's weight
throw with a mark of 15.6 meters, and placed eighth in the shot
put, recording a distance of 12.27 meters.
Sophomore Kate McGuire and junior Katherine Bossardet were
tops on the track at last year's championship meet. McGuire placed
fifth int he 500 meters, crossing the line in 1:20.57, while
Bossardet was ninth in the 5,000 meter run in a time of
18:51.09.
CCSU just finished up competition at the Jay Carisella
Invitational and will next be in action after the break. The Blue
Devils will compete in the Sorlein Invitational at Rhode Island on
Friday January 15.
