The Central Connecticut volleyball team earned its third consecutive AVCA Team Academic Award, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches' Association. The Blue Devils were one of 71 NCAA Division I teams to receive the honor, which is given to schools maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average.
"I am extremely proud of the academic accomplishments our student-athletes have achieved," CCSU head coach Linda Sagnelli said. "The dedication and commitment they have demonstrated in order to receive this honor three years in a row is exemplary."
The Blue Devils put forth a team GPA of 3.52 for the semester, which is the highest mark for any CCSU volleyball squad. Overall a record 409 schools, which include programs from all NCAA ranks, the NAIA, two-year programs and high schools, earned the award.
Central Connecticut will host the Blue Devil Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sep. 4-5 to open the 2009 season. The Blue Devils begin the tournament with a 4 p.m. match-up against Manhattan on Friday.
