Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

The Central Connecticut volleyball team was honored with the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award on Wednesday afternoon.  The AVCA has been recognizing teams for academic success for the last 19 years.  This marks the fifth consecutive year that the Blue Devils have received the honor.

The award is presented to collegiate and high school volleyball teams that maintain a cumulative grade point average above 3.30 on a 4.0 scale.  Coach Linda Sagnelli's squad maintained a 3.43 grade point average during the 2010-11 academic year.  Earlier this year the volleyball team was recognized as having the highest grade point average among all CCSU teams at the annual end of the year athletic awards.

In total, 478 teams were honored this year that was the highest number ever recognized by the AVCA.   The Blue Devils were one of 92 NCAA Division I teams to be recognized, and one of four Northeast Conference squads.

The volleyball season is set to begin on August 26, at Holy Cross.  Central will open the home slate on September 9, with the CCSU Volleyball Invitational.  That tournament will feature St. Peter's, Bucknell and Stony Brook.
