The Central Connecticut volleyball team defeated Hartford on Wednesday evening to improve to 2-2 on the season. The Blue Devils won the first (25-22), third (25-21) and fourth (25-22) sets to earn the match victory. Senior Emily Cochran had a team-high 18 kills.
The Blue Devils earned the first set victory behind six kills from Cochran. Defensively, sophomore Rachel Dunlap contributed a pair of solo-blocks and six different Blue Devils recorded a dig.
After dropping the second game, Central rebounded with a victory in the third set. Cochran again led the charge with six kills and a .357 hitting percentage. Dunlap also chipped in with three kills on seven attacks.
CCSU captured the fourth set and the match with a late comeback that featured three kills from Cochran and two from Dunlap, who also had a crucial block to tie the match at 17-17. Also fueling the late run were seniors Blaike King and Jamie Rademacher. King recorded a kill, Rademacher an ace and the duo teamed up for a block. The final point came on Cochran's 18th kill of the match.
Hartford falls to 1-3 with the loss. The Hawks won the second set 25-16.
After Cochran's 18 kills, the Blue Devils featured a balanced attack with King (9), Dunlap (8) and Rademacher (7) all posting strong showings. Freshman Makenna Lommori set on most of the attacks and finished with 26 assists. Freshman Ashley Lenington also contributed 13 assists.
Defensively, sophomore Brittany Schumacher and Cochran each totaled 11 digs and senior Allyson Porter had 10. Dunlap led the way at the net with three of the Blue Devils' four solo blocks, Rademacher had the other.
The Blue Devils will return to action on Friday afternoon in the first match of the CCSU Blue Devil Invitational. Central will play St. John's at 4:30 p.m. with Brown vs. Holy Cross to follow. All four teams will play a pair of games at Detrick Gym on Saturday.
