Women's Hoop Tops Dartmouth in Detrick Gym on Tuesday
The Blue Devils will open NEC play on Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. at Bryant.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team moved to 3-8 overall on the season with its second win in their last three games on Tuesday night. The Blue Devils topped Dartmouth 59-55 in Detrick Gym, where Central is now 3-1 on the season and has won two straight.
Sophomore Camden Musgrave led the Blue Devils with 14 points and a pair of steals in the victory.
Dartmouth is now 4-11 overall on the year after the loss. The Blue Devils will next play Saturday when they open league play on the road at Bryant in Smithfield, RI at 1 p.m.
The Blue Devils trailed 26-25 at the half after a late three from the Big Green, but used a big third quarter to build a 15-point lead at one point in the frame. Central hit 9-of-11 from the field to begin the second half and used a 19-2 run to build a 46-31 lead, their largest of the game.
Dartmouth responded though with a quick 7-0 run of its own, and cut the lead to 46-38. Central led 48-40 at the end of the third quarter after shooting 12-of-19 from the field in the third stanza. They had made just 10-of-29 from the floor prior in the first half but managed to only trail by one at the half.
Freshman Kiana Patterson led the Blue Devils with nine first half points, all coming on three's, and all coming in the second quarter.
Midway through the fourth quarter the Blue Devils led 54-42 after a pair of free-throws from senior TeJahne Malone.
Dartmouth cut the Blue Devil lead to 54-46 as Central went over five minutes without a point. Neither team could get anything going offensively and the Blue Devils missed six straight free-throws before Darmouth made a bucket to make it 54-48 with under a minute to play.
Junior Aleah Epps made a pair of free-throws with 44.9 seconds to play and the lead went back to 56-48 to seal the win for CCSU. The Blue Devils and Big Green traded baskets and free-throws for the final 30 seconds of action to account for the 59-55 final.
Musgrave's 14 points led the Blue Devils and she also posted a pair of steals. Malone had 12 points and seven rebounds and senior Kayla Miller added 11 points and six boards. The Blue Devils outrebounded the Big Green 34-29 including 11 on the offensive end of the floor. Those 11 boards led to 22 points in the paint for CCSU.
The Blue Devils will be back in action and will open Northeast Conference action on the road at Bryant on Jan. 2 in Smithfield, RI at 1 p.m.
