The Central Connecticut men's golf team finished the first round of the 2013 Lafayette Invitational in a second place tie. The Blue Devils shot a 303 and are currently one stroke back of the event's leader St. Peter's who carded a 302.
St. Peter's leads the Blue Devils and Lehigh who are both knotted up for second. Army and Northeast Conference rival Monmouth rounded out the top-five, both teams tied for fourth place.
The 2013 Lafayette Invitational will conclude tomorrow, April 8th. The event is being hosted at North Hampton Country Club in Easton, PA. The course is a par-72, 6,393 yard course.
Central was led by sophomore Monte Mullen who wrote-in a team best 74 after Sunday's round. He penciled in a 38 on his first nine holes followed by a 36 going out. Mullen is tied for fourth on the individual leader board.
Senior Captain Dan Fanion is tied for 13th place after scoring a 75 on Sunday. Fanion recorded an impressive 33 on the front nine and ended his round with a 42.
Tied with Fanion for 13th place is teammate Matthew DeJohn who also shot a 75. DeJohn posted scores of 37 and 38 on his first and second nine holes of the day. Freshman Jack Ayers is tied for 45th after shooting a 79.
"The boys are getting better every tournament. The winter rust is wearing off fast. I am very proud of their performance today. Once again in very tough conditions with fast greens and very high winds." Head Coach Kevin Giancola said of his team.
The second and final round of the tournament will begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow, April 8th.
