Crockett Records Career High 16 Rebounds In 55-50 Loss to Holy Cross
Junior Leanne Crockett recorded her second straight double-double, but Central Connecticut State University dropped to 0-2 on the season with a 55-50 home loss to Holy Cross on Monday night. Crockett's 17 points were a team high and her 16 rebounds a career best. Sophomore point guard Shontice Simmons chipped in with 11 points, five assists and five steals in the defeat.
After Holy Cross got out to a 44-32 lead with 13:02 remaining in the second half CCSU went on a 14-4 run in the next nine minutes to come with two on a layup by junior Kerrianne Dugan. Simmons was integral in the run, scoring five points and recording an assist on a layup by sophomore Alexzandria Dowdy. With the score now 48-46, the Crusaders came back with a run of their own, scoring five straight points which provided a cushion that led Holy Cross to a 55-50 win over the Blue Devils.
Central got off to a quick start to open the game, scoring the first five points on a three-pointer and a jumper by Crockett. Simmons assisted her on both plays. Holy Cross then went on a 9-2 run to take the lead for the first and only time. The Crusaders never lost the lead from 13:32 mark in the first half onward.
Crockett's 17 points and 16 rebounds gives her an average of 16.5 point and 13.5 rebounds per game through CCSU's first two contests. Her 16 rebounds tonight were a career high for the junior and it was the first time a Central player recorded 15 rebounds in a game since the 2007-08 season when Danica Covington had 17 at Wagner on January 7.
Dugan finished with nine points, five assists and five rebounds, while senior P.J. Wade tallied eight points, two rebounds and two steals for the Blue Devils. Dowdy came off the bench and created a spark both offensively and defensively for CCSU. She scored only one basket for her two points, but had three offensive rebounds and four total in the game.
Holy Cross was led by senior guard Brianna McFadden with a game high 20 points and six rebounds. Senior Bethany O'Dell chipped in 10 points, on three three-point baskets, and five rebounds. Junior Whitney Fremeau led the Crusaders in rebounds with seven, and added nine points in the victory.
Central is now 0-2 on the season and will next play host to Fordham on Wednesday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m.
