CCSU's Win Streak Snapped by Wagner, 17-12
Sophomore Ashley Perkoski scored three goals and added one assist, but Central Connecticut State University gave up six straight goals in the second half and fell to Wagner by a score of 17-12 at home on Thursday. The Blue Devils fall to 4-5 on the season and 0-4 in Northeast Conference action and will next host Long Island on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
CCSU used a 4-0 run late in the first half to take its first lead of the game since Perkoski fed freshman Betsy Vendel to make it 1-0 at the 26:19 mark. Freshman Meaghan McCurry, senior Lyndsey Mastandrea, Vendel and junior Michele Conway each scored during the stretch to give the Blue Devils a 6-5 lead with 4:20 to play in the opening frame.
The Seahawks took the lead back before the break with two scores in the final four minutes. CCSU then opened the second half scoring with Perkoski finishing off of one of Vendel's four assists on the day to make it 7-7 just 44 seconds into the second half.
Wagner then held Central Connecticut scoreless for the next 14:20, as the Seahawks tallied six straight goals to take a commanding 13-7 lead. Teri Noll and Annie O'Connor each scored two goals for Wagner during the run.
The Blue Devils got as close as four on two separate occasions but could never close the gap as Wagner went on to the 17-12 victory. The Seahawks took advantage of their free positions, converting on five out of nine free position shots. The Blue Devils went 1-5 on their opportunities.
Perkoski led CCSU with three goals and added one assist, while Vendel scored two goals and finished with game highs of four assists and five caused turnovers. Conway chipped in with two scores of her own and freshman Mackenzy Ryan led the Blue Devils with four draw controls in the defeat.
Sophomore Erin DeLancey recorded 14 saves in goal for CCSU, while Seahawk goalkeeper Alex Johnston stopped 11 shots in the game.
