Baseball Drops 8-5 Decision at George Washington on Monday
The Central Connecticut baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision
on the road at George Washington on Monday afternoon. With the
loss the Blue Devils are now 1-5-1 on the season. A busy week
continues on Tuesday for Central. They will host Yale on the CCSU
campus beginning at 3 p.m. Yale and CCSU will also play on
Wednesday at 3.
The Blue Devils scored first with a single run in the top of
the first inning. Junior Jake
Matuszak walked and scored on a double from junior Mitch
Wells. Wells drove in a run for the fourth straight game, it
was his ninth RBI of the season. He would finish the game with
three RBI, giving him 11 on the season to lead the Blue
Devils.
George Washington answered with four runs in the bottom of the
inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Colonials used five hits off of
Blue Devil starter Roy
Natoli, along with an error in the inning, to build the
three-run lead.
GW added a single run in the third inning, before Central
answered with two in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-3.
Senior Pat Epps
singled to lead off the inning and went to second on an error. He
went to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a throwing error
by the GW catcher. With two out in the inning senior Normand
Gosselin doubled and then score on an RBI single from junior AJ
Lowers.
The Colonials answered again, this time with three runs in the
bottom of the fourth to build an 8-3 lead. Natoli left the game
allowing eight runs, all earned, on 12 hits in 3.2 innings.
Wells added two RBI on a single in the top of the ninth inning
to make it 8-5.
Wells had three hits and three RBI in the loss. Lowers
finished with a pair of hits and an RBI. Junior Harry
Glynne pitched the final 4.1 innings allowing just two hits
while striking out four for the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils return to action hosting Yale on Tuesday and
Wednesday at 3 p.m. in New Britain. They begin conference action
this weekend against Bryant hosting a four-game series beginning on
Friday afternoon.
