The Central Connecticut men's golf team placed first at the New England Championships shooting a day two 294 (304/294/598). The Blue Devils are back-to-back champions at the tournament winning it in 2011 as well. Central dramatically edged Hartford (302/297/599) by one stroke to claim the tournament victory. Rhode Island placed third (309/297/606), Fordham fourth (306/303/609), and NEC rival Sacred Heart rounded out the top-five (313/307/620).
Newport National Golf Course hosted the two-day, 36-hole tournament in Newport, RI. The course was a par-73 course playing 7,244 yards long. Eight teams fielded the event, all from the New England region.
Senior Kevin Josephson and junior Dan Fanion both birdied the 18th hole in dramatic fashion to help Central capture the tournament championship. Fanion finished second individually (74/71/145), just two strokes behind the tournament's individual champion Matt Smith from Hartford (72/71/143). Josephson placed fourth on the individual leader board (77/70/147), his fourth top-ten finish of the season and second in a row.
Sophomore Daniel Morgan and freshman Monte Mullen each shared tenth place on the leader board. Morgan (75/78/153) shot a round two 78 and Mullen (78/75/153) a 75. Junior William Finnerty capped a 23rd place tie (78/82/160).
The Blue Devils finished with four golfers in the top-ten on the individual leader board, Fanion, Josephson, Morgan, and Mullen. Central was the only team to place four top-ten individual finishers in the tournament. This win marks the Blue Devils' first 2011-12 season tournament victory.
Central will be back in action on April 23rd at the St. Peter's Peacock Invitational.
