The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team fell to the Aggies of U.C. Davis on Wednesday afternoon on Arute Field in their home opener, 19-11. The Blue Devils fall to 1-1 on the season with the loss while U.C. Davis improves to 3-1. Central returns to action on Saturday on the road at Iona at 2 p.m.
The Aggies used their speed to get off to a fast start scoring a pair of goals in the first two minutes of the game. The Blue Devils got on the board in the sixth minute of the game when sophomore Betsy Vendel found senior Michele Conway with a quick pass in front of the net for a score.
Junior Ashley Mara scored the next Blue Devil goal with a free position strike 10 minutes into the game. Her goal cut the U.C. Davis lead to 4-2. Vendel notched her first goal of the season with after cutting down the middle for an unassisted score, again cutting the Aggies lead to 6-3.
U.C. Davis scored the next four goals to take a 11-3 lead into the half.
The Blue Devils were more productive in the second half. After falling behind by 10, 14-4, the Blue Devils ended the game by scoring seven of the final 12 goals. They cut the lead to seven, 15-8, after the third goal of the game from Vendel.
Vendel led the Blue Devils with four goals and an assist in the loss. Mara and sophomore Mackenzy Ryan each had a pair of goals. Mara added an assist. Sophomore Meaghan McCurry had a goal and an assist.
U.C. Davis was led by Gina Hoffmire who had a game-high seven goals and one assist. Christina Corsa added three goals and Laura Martin and Hannah Mirza each added two.
Central goalkeeper Erin Delancey made 13 stops in goal for the Blue Devils in the loss. Aggie goalkeeper Jordan Majka had three saves.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday on the road at Iona at 2 p.m.
