Lacrosse Falls to Mount 13-8
The Central Connecticut lacrosse team fell to Mount St. Mary's by a score of 13-8 on Sunday afternoon at Arute Field. The loss drops the Blue Devils to 0-3 in Northeast Conference action and 5-5 on the overall on the season. The Blue Devils were led by three points from junior Ashley Mara.
Central struck first to start the game as Mara scored less than two minutes into the game off of a pass from sophomore Meaghan McCurry. Sophomore Betsy Vendel followed two minutes later with an unassisted goal to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 advantage.
The Mount scored the next three goals to take a 3-2 advantage with 11:58 left in the game.
The Blue Devils responded with a goal from Vendel, off of a pass from sophomore Mackenzy Ryan. That tied the score and then McCurry found the back of the net with the help of Mara to give the Blue Devils a 4-3 lead.
The leaddidn't last long as the Mountaineers scored the final two goals of the half, including a go ahead goal with only eight seconds left in the period.
After taking a 5-4 lead into the half, the Mount quickly added to it with a goal seven seconds into the second period. Central tied it with back-to-back goals as Mackenzy scored off of a free position, and then Mara notched an unassisted goal to tie the game at 6-6.
After a Mount goal to take the lead, Central scored as senior Michele Conway notched her 22nd goal of the season on a free position shot. That goal tied the game at seven.
Mount scored the next five goals to take a 12-7 lead. Conway scored her team leading 23rd goal of the season off to cut the lead to 12-8, but Mount answered with a goal to make the final score 13-8.
Junior goalkeeper Erin DeLancey made nine saves, but still takes the loss. She falls to 5-5 on the season.
The Blue Devils return to action this weekend as they make the trip to western Pennsylvania to take on Robert Morris on Friday and St. Francis on Sunday.
