Blue Devils Drop Northeast Conference Game at Robert Morris on Thursday Night
Central Connecticut's two-game Northeast Conference win streak came to an end on Thursday night with a 76-64 loss at first-place Robert Morris. The loss runs CCSU's record to 7-9 overall and 3-3 in the NEC. The Colonials improve to 11-7 overall and 6-1 in league play. Sophomore forward Ken Horton led the offense with 16 points in the game. Central Connecticut returns to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. at St. Francis (PA).
Central Connecticut's two-game Northeast Conference win streak
came to an end on Thursday night with a 76-64 loss at first-place
Robert Morris. The loss runs CCSU's record to 7-9 overall and 3-3
in the NEC. The Colonials improve to 11-7 overall and 6-1 in
league play. Sophomore forward Ken Horton led the offense with 16 points
in the game. Central Connecticut returns to action on Saturday at
4 p.m. at St. Francis (PA).
Central Connecticut led 5-2 early but Robert Morris responded with
an 11-0 run to take a 13-5 lead with 14 minutes left in the first
half. The Blue Devils hit just two of their first 12 shots from
the field before a Horton basket cut it to 13-7.
Junior Joe Seymore hit his second three of the
game to cut it it to 19-15 but RMU's Jeremy Chappell answered with
a three of his own to make it 22-15 with 7:13 on the clock. The
Blue Devils hit 3-of-4 from three to start the game but were just
6-of-20 at that point in the contest. A 10-0 run by the Colonials
gave them a 36-17 with under three minutes to play.
Robert Morris led 41-19 at the half. The Blue Devils, playing
without sophomore point guard Shemik Thompson for the first time this
season, turned the ball over 11 times before the half. The 11
miscues led to 15 Robert Morris points. The 19 points were the
fewest points scored in the first half this season for Central
Connecticut. CCSU shot just 8-of-27 from the floor before the
break while the home team was 16-of-30 and 4-of-9 from three. The
Blue Devils were just 5-of-23 from three.
Central Connecticut opened the second half with an 10-2 run to cut
the Robert Morris lead to 43-27 with 15:30 to play. Following an
offensive rebound and basket by freshman Chris Baskerville RMU called a timeout with
the 16 point lead. Off the timeout freshman Robby Ptacek made a basket to cut the lead
to 43-29.
The Robert Morris offense responded and they scored 11 of the next
17 points to lead 54-35. Seymore's third three of the game cut it
to 57-42 with just over eight on the clock. Nine straight points
by RMU gave the home team the 66-42 advantage, their largest lead
of the game to that point.
A 19-5 run by the Blue Devils cut the lead to 71-61 with 1:20 left
to play in the half. The two teams traded baskets to make it 73-63
with under a minute to play.
Horton led the way with 16 points while Baskerville scored a
career-high 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore Tamir Johnson grabbed a career-high 10
rebounds in the loss. Senior Marcus Palmer, Ptacek and Seymore each
scored nine points.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. at St.
