Women's Basketball Wins Second Straight

The Central Connecticut women's basketball team defeated Mount St. Mary's 73-63 on Monday night at Knott Arena.  It is the second straight road victory for the Blue Devils (8-9, 2-4 NEC) who secured their first two Northeast Conference wins of the season this weekend.

Sophomore Jessica Babe led the offense for the second straight game and fell just short of recording the program's first triple-double.

The Central defense dominated the early minutes of the game.  Mount was held to a single field goal and five total points over the first 10 minutes of the play.

During that time the Blue Devils built a 21-5 lead.  Junior Jaclyn Babe scored seven points while Central built the early lead.  Senior Kirsten Daamen, sophomore Lauren Arbogast and freshman Kaley Watras each contributed four points during the run.

With less than seven minutes remaining in the half Jessica Babe dropped in a pair of jumpers that pushed the Blue Devil lead to 35-15.

Central held a 20-point lead three times during the first half, but Mount St. Mary's closed the gap to 10 points on a pair of free-throws by Sydney Henderson with just 39 seconds remaining.

The Blue Devils answered before the break, as Watras hit a long two pointer at the buzzer to put her team in front 42-30.  The shot gave the Blue Devils a 12 point lead and stopped the Mountaineer's momentum heading into the half.

The Blue Devils maintained control of the game throughout the second half.  Central matched every run that the Mount tried.  The Mountaineers were never able to close the gap to less than eight points during the second half.

Jaclyn and Jessica Babe combined for 21 of Central's 42 first half points.  In the second half, Arbogast led the offense with eight points, with Daamen and Watras each scoring six.

Jessica Babe finished the game with an impressive line of 15 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and two steals.

Jessica Babe's 15 points were a team-high.  Jaclyn Babe  (13), Arbogast (12), Watras (12) and Daamen (10) also finished in double-digits.  Central had five players score in double-digits for the first time since February 14, 2009.

Watras scored her 12 points in only 17 minutes on the floor.  She was two-of-three from the field and eight-of-nine from the free throw line.  Watras helped put the game away in the final minutes by hitting four-of-five free throw attempts.

The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday at Sacred Heart.  The game is scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m.
