Women's Lax Drops First Home Game

The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team dropped its first home game of the season, 10-8, to Holy Cross on Wednesday night.  The loss, which drops the Blue Devils to 6-1 at home this season, is the first for the Blue Devils since April 7.

With the loss the Blue Devils are now 7-7 overall on the season.  Holy Cross improves to 8-7 with the victory.

The Cross scored the first three goals of the game, all coming in the first 3:22.  Central answered three of the next four goals to cut the score to 4-3.  Junior Betsy Vendel scored the first goal, and then assisted on the next two to help the Blue Devils within one.  Junior Meaghan McCurry scored the next two goals for the Blue Devils, and Holy Cross led 4-3 at 5:27.

The Crusaders scored the final three goals of the half to take a 7-3 lead at the break. 

Vendel posted her third assist of the game, on a goal by junior Mackenzy Ryan, to cut the score to 7-4.  Holy Cross answered with a pair of goals to build the lead to 9-4 and forced Central to use a timeout.

Senior Ashley Perkoski scored her first goal of the game with 27:07 left to cut the lead to 9-5.  McCurry's third goal of the night, five minutes later, cut it to 9-6.   She forced a Holy Cross timeout with her fourth goal, at 16:35, making it 9-7, the closest the Blue Devils had been since it was 6-4 in the first half.

Holy Cross scored to make it 10-7, and then McCurry scored her fifth goal to cut it to 10-8 with under five minutes to play.

She ended the night with a game-high five goals.  Vendel added a goal and three assists for the Blue Devils.  Senior Erin DeLlancey made 10 saves in net for Central.

Prior to the game the Blue Devils honored their six seniors who were playing their final regular season home game on Arute Field.  Perkoski, DeLlancey, Meghan Burke, Ashley Mara, Cara Momnie and Chelsea Malloy were honored on the field with their familes prior to the game.

The Blue Devils will take to the road for their two regular season Northeast Conference games of the season.  Central plays on the road at Quinnipiac on Friday at 4 p.m., and then travels to Sacred Heart for the season finale on Sunday.
