Central Connecticut sophomore Leanne Crockett was named the Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week. It is the first honor for Crockett, who scored 17 points and had seven rebounds and four assists in CCSU's only action of the week, a 66-49 victory over Long Island. The Manchester, CT native's effort helped propel the Blue Devils to a 2-0 start against Northeast Conference opponents for the first time since the 2000-01 season.
Crockett shot 6-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, in Central Connecticut's 17-point win over the Blackbirds. She and classmates Justina Udenze and Kerrianne Dugan combined for 47 points on 19-of-25 shooting in the victory, which allowed CCSU to surpass its entire win total from last season. At 5-4, the Blue Devils are off to their best start since opening the 2000-01 season with the same record.
Crockett, who was inactive during her freshman season at UMBC and sat out last season after transferring, is the NEC's second-leading rebounder (9.1 rpg) during her first year of collegiate competition at CCSU. She is also averaging 8.7 points per game.
Central Connecticut will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 22. The Blue Devils travel to Fordham for non-conference competition. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Fans can listen to live action on CCSUBlueDevils.com. Check out the mediaCENTRAL section on the home page to learn more.
