Central Connecticut freshman Shontice Simmons was named the Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Rookie of the week this afternoon. Simmons averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in a 1-1 week for the Blue Devils.
Simmons led Central Connecticut in scoring during a week that saw the Blue Devils assure the program of its first winning record since the 2000-01 season and move closer to clinching the second seed in March's NEC Tournament. She had 15 points, six assists, and four rebounds to lead CCSU in a 71-69 comeback victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. With CCSU facing its largest deficit (9) and 6:59 left to play against the Knights, Simmons sparked an 11-0 run that put the Blue Devils in front by two. The rookie point guard sunk one of her five three pointers on the week to start the run before adding a jumper in the paint moments later. Earlier in the week, Simmons scored a career-high 26 points and had three steals Bryant. She shot 13-of-29 (.448) from the field over the two contests, including a 5-of-12 (.417) clip from downtown.
Simmons, who leads the Blue Devils in scoring (12.3 ppg), assists (3.5 apg) and steals (1.9 spg), celebrates her first career Choice Hotels weekly rookie honor, and third by a Blue Devil this season. Sophomore Leanne Crockett earned the prior two.
The Blue Devils, who have won four straight league games, will host St. Francis (NY) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21.
