2010 Blue Devil Softball Blood Bowl
The Central Connecticut softball team hosted its second annual Blood Bowl this past weekend. The Blood Bowl is a charity event in which the team is divided evenly for an intrasquad game, with the losing team encouraged to donate blood at the next American Red Cross Blood Drive held on campus. As part of the festivities the players get to pick their own team names, this year's game saw the "Little Leaguers" mount a huge comeback to defeat the "Softball Gods", 9-7.
The Softball Gods struck first scoring five runs in the first inning. The Little Leaguers climbed back to 5-3, but the Softball Gods added two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a comanding 7-3 lead.
It all changed in the bottom of the sixth when Erica Koehler connected on a deep drive over the scoreboard in right center for a grand slam. The Little Leaguers were not finished, adding another pair of runs in the inning to take a 9-7 lead.
The Softball Gods went down in order in the top of the seventh, giving the Little Leaguers the victory. Julie Marks was the winning pitcher for the Little Leaguers and Erica Colon took the loss for the Softball Gods.
The 2010 Blood Bowl was a well played and exciting game but coach Jeff Franquet was quick to point out the more important side of this game, "This is a great event for our team. Win or lose the bottom line is at the end of the day we all are helping save a life by donating blood to the American Red Cross. This will be an event we will do every fall. I am really proud of my team, and they are looking forward to next year's game."
