Softball Splits Doubleheader on Day Two at USF
The Central Connecticut softball team split a doubleheader on its second day of action at the Under Armour Showcase at the University of South Florida. The Blue Devils dropped LaSalle, 10-4, in their first game, but fell to Boston University, 2-1, in their second. The split pushes the Blue Devils record to 6-8-1 on the season.
Freshman Arielle Bruno went four-for-five and sophomore Kelsey Barlow went three-for-five to lead the Blue Devils in a victory over LaSalle. Barlow notched her team-high fourth homerun of the season, as both players drove in a pair of runs. Senior Kat Knowles had a game-high three rbis for Central.
Central and laSalle each posted three runs in the first inning. Following a walk and an error to start the game, Bruno singled to left field to score the Blue Devils first run of the game. The next two Blue Devil runs were scored on a walk and an error by the shortstop.
Central grabbed the lead in the second inning. Junior Rebecca Mussatti who singled to lead off the inning scored on an rbi double from Bruno.
The Blue Devils pulled away with three runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Two of the runs in the fourth inning came off of the bat of Barlow, who followed Bruno's third hit of the afternoon with a long homerun to left field. It was Barlow's fourth long ball of the season.
In the fifth inning senior Kat Knowles delivered a bases clearing three run double to left center. That shot put the Blue Devils ahead 10-4, and freshman pitcher Julie Marks had no trouble protecting the lead.
Marks earned her third win of the season with the complete game effort. She struck out seven batters while walking only two. After surrendering three runs in the first inning she settled down and held LaSalle to a single run in the top of the fourth.
The Blue Devils and Terriers found themselves locked up in a pitcher's duel deep into the game. Central's Jordan Tingley was the tough luck loser allowing a single run in the sixth and seventh as the Blue Devils fell to Boston University, 2-1.
The Blue Devils finally got on the board in the top of the sixth when senior Erica Koehler delivered a sac fly to right field to score freshman Tessa Brown for the Blue Devils only run of the game.
Freshmen Arielle Bruno and Tessa Brown led the Blue Devils with a pair of hits each, both went two-for-four at the plate.
Tingley went 6.2 innings in the loss as the Terriers scored the winning run with two outs in the seventh. She allowed only three hits, struck out three, and only let up one earned run.
The Blue Devils return to action at the Under Armour Showcase at USF with a single game tomorrow morning.
