The Central Connecticut softball team has earned their first appearance in the Northeast Conference Championship Tournament. The Blue Devils finished the conference season at 11-9, but had to wait for the results of this weekend's makeup games to determine if they had reached their first ever NEC postseason. On Saturday, Monmouth split a doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's giving Central the #4 seed in the tournament.
The location of the tournament and the final seeding will not be determined until Sunday when Mount St. Mary's visits Robert Morris. Robert Morris is currently in first place at 13-5, but if Mount can take a game in the doubleheader then Robert Morris would fall to second place and Sacred Heart and Bryant would share the NEC regular season title.
The NEC Tournament is held at the highest seed and Robert Morris or Sacred Heart will be the host depending on tomorrow's results. Robert Morris and Sacred Heart will be the top two seeds in the tournament with the final seeds determined tomorrow. Quinnipiac will be the number three seed and Central will be the number four team in their first NEC Tournament.
The Blue Devils completed a historic regular season on Thursday with a sweep of Seton Hall. The two wins on Thursday give the softball team a Division I program record 29 victories this season. Earlier this season against Princeton, the Blue Devils scored 17 runs in a single inning. That number tied for the second most runs scored in any inning of NCAA Division I softball.
On an individual level the Blue Devils saw a couple school records fall this season. Senior Elizabeth Montemurro became the Blue Devils all-time leader in victories, she finished the season with 36 victories. Senior Katherine Knowles became Central's all-time leader in doubles, she currently has 37 career doubles.
