Central Connecticut softball's junior Tessa Brown and sophomore Laura Messina were named NEC Player of the Week and NEC Co-Pitcher of the Week for their performances in last week's 4-0 sweep, the league announced Monday. The Blue Devils are riding an eight-win streak and are 6-0 in conference play.
Brown earns her first NEC weekly honor of the season. She went 6-for-9 at the plate in the Blue Devils' 4-0 week. She batted .667 including going two-for-two against Holy Cross, posting two RBI and one double in game two of the doubleheader. She tallied three RBI, scored two runs and drew four walks on the week, both of her runs coming against conference foe Bryant. She turned in a .769 on base percentage and a .778 slugging percentage. She also registered 10 putouts and three assists through the four games.
Messina earns her second consecutive NEC Pitcher of the Week honor, as she went 3-0 on the week, including two wins over Bryant to move her conference record to 6-0. The sophomore registered two shutouts this week to reach 12 for her career and break the previous CCSU record of 10. Messina posted a 0.37 ERA on the week, allowing only one run in 19 innings of play. She struck out 13 batters against Holy Cross and eight in the first game of the Bryant doubleheader. She posted 27 strikeouts her last three games, breaking the 300 career strikeout mark and nearing the CCSU record of 313.
The Blue Devils return to action this weekend, April 6-7, for four-straight conference match-ups at the CCSU Softball Field in New Britain, CT. Central is scheduled to play Sacred Heart in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and Saint Francis (PA) in a Sunday doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
