Junior Becky Anderson put George Mason ahead 1-0 with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. She then scored on a double off the bat of sophomore Kate Bustin to make it 2-0. Both runs, which would be all that Montemurro surrendered, were unearned.
Freshman Abby Harpp pitched the sixth inning for the Blue Devils. She didn't allow a hit, but the Patriots cushioned their lead on another unearned run. Freshman Tori Dudley walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a ground out and scored on an error.
Central Connecticut cut the lead to 3-1 with an unearned run in the seventh, but Anderson, who pitched a complete game for the win, struck out sophomore Erin Kelley with runners on first and third to end the Blue Devil comeback threat.
Anderson allowed just three hits and struck out seven in the win. Harrp posted two strikeouts in her inning of work. Montemurro allowed five hits in her five innings. Bustin finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead all hitters.
Central Connecticut will next head to the Capital Classic hosted by Delaware State. The Blue Devils open the two-day event with a 9 a.m. game against St. Francis (PA) on Saturday, March 14.
