In this, the 40th year of Central Connecticut State University Soccer, this season's CCSU team will be honoring the Blue Devil soccer stars that took the field before them in a new tradition for 2009- Blue Devil Legends. Prior to each home game this season a former CCSU player will be honored with a framed certificate and picture, as well as a CCSU game jersey from head coach Shaun Green. Green, in his 25th year on the Blue Devil sidelines, will present the awards to many of his former players.
In an exhibition match against Monroe Community College on August 26, Monroe head coach Marcus D'Bernardo was honored as the first Blue Devil Legend. Both the CCSU and Monroe teams joined Green and D'Bernardo at half field to applaud the ceremony. "I am very proud of Marcus and what he accomplished at Central and as a coach after graduation," said Green. "He is deserving of this recognition and I am proud we can celebrate his success in front of our home crowd, his team and our fans and friends. He is a fantastic person as well as a great coach."
Before this Saturday's game with Holy Cross, former CCSU star Everton Barrington will be honored as the Blue Devil Legend of the day. In 1994 Barrington led Central to the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. In that season he set the CCSU single-season record, which still stands to this day, scoring 24 goals. The former forward is also tied for the school record for most assists in a game, recording three on two occasions. Barrington finished his career (1990-1994) with 50 goals and 17 assists, a total of 117 points. He received all-conference recognition three times in his career, including Mid-Con Conference Player of the Year honors in his senior campaign.
Other former CCSU players that will be honored this season are Blue Devil assistant coach Paul Wright (9/16), James Sheridan (9/29), David Clarke (10/2), Ted Christensen (10/23), Harry Vreeland (10/25), and Gareth Wilkinson (11/6). The CCSU will kick off the home season on Saturday September 12 at 4:00 p.m. when they take on Holy Cross.
