CCSU Falls to 3-1-0 After 2-0 Loss to Yale

The Central Connecticut State University men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Yale University at home on Wednesday afternoon. It marked the first loss of the season for the Blue Devils, who are now 3-1-0 on the season. CCSU senior goalkeeper Paul Armstrong made three saves in the game, two of which came while the game was tied 0-0 in the second half.

With plenty of shots, but not many true scoring opportunities, both teams batteled to get an advantage in the opening period. Yale ended up with six corner kicks to CCSU's zero, but the Blue Devils outshot the Bulldogs eight to five in the half.

Central had its best opportunity to take a lead in the second half in the 65th minute. Senior captain Eddie Floyd ran onto a deflected ball just outside the box and rifled a volley to the lower right corner of the goal. Yale goalkeeper Travis Chulick made an outstanding save to keep the match tied.

Yale then took advantage of injuries to CCSU's junior captain Robert Cavener and sophomore center back Jared Spieker late in the second half. Without Cavener and Spieker controlling the central midfield and defense, respectively, the Bulldogs tallied both of their goals in the final 14 minutes of play.

The first score for Yale came when Jon Carlos received a through ball down the right side in the 77th minute. He fed a ball across the box and found Kevin Peterson on the other end who finished past Armstrong. Only 11 minutes later the Bulldogs found themselves in a position to nearly clinch the game with a penalty kick for a take-down in the box. Andy Hackbarth stepped up to the line and finished the penalty shot with authority to give Yale the 2-0 victory.

CCSU falls to 3-1-0 on the season and will next play on the road at Siena on Saturday September 19 at 3:00 p.m.
