Cavener Named First Team All-Northeast Conference

Central Connecticut State University junior captain Robert Cavener received All-Northeast Conference honors for the second straight season on Thursday. Cavener was a first team selection, as announced at the conference's banquet on the eve of the league tournament to be held at Monmouth this weekend.

The Tynemouth, England native was a second team honoree as a sophomore, but received first team accolades after leading the Blue Devils and the NEC with eight assists in 2009. Cavener scored his lone goal of the season at home against St. Francis (NY) on October 23. The central midfielder's eight assists were the most by a CCSU player since Yan Klukowski recorded eight during the Blue Devil's NEC Championship year of 2007.

Cavener got Central off to a good start this season, winning both games at the Nike New Hampshire Classic. The Blue Devils defeated Vermont, 2-1, and the host Wildcats, 3-1, while Cavener collected Tournament MVP honors. Later on in the year, the captain tallied three assists in a single game during CCSU's 3-2 home victory over Robert Morris on October 4. Recently Cavener was recognized for his efforts on and off the field, being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District I First Team. He is now on the ballot to become an Academic All-American.

Cavener and the Blue Devils finished the season 6-10-1 and will return in 2010 challenging to make it back to the NEC Tournament for the first time since 2007.
