Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener at Home to Army on Thursday Night
Army scored with less than a minute to play in regulation to top
the Central Connecticut State University women's soccer team 1-0 in
its season opener on Thursday night. Freshman goalkeeper Nikola
Deiter made eight saves in goal for the Blue Devils in her first
career start. Central returns to action on Sunday playing on the
road at Boston College beginning at 1 p.m.
Army's Carlie Turnnidge took a corner kick for the Black Knights
with under a minute to play, it was the second straight corner kick
after the first attempt resulted in a shot that went off a Central
player out of bounds. This time, however, Turnnidge's shot reached
Deiter in the Central goal. The ball was bobbled slightly by the
freshman and ruled to have crossed the goal line, resulting in the
only score of the game.
Deiter made an impressive eight saves in her debut for the Blue
Devils. Several of those saves came at point blank range.
The Black Knights outshot the Blue Devils 14-3 in the match,
including 9-2 in shots on goal. The also held the advantage in
corner kicks, 9-4.
Army improves to 1-1 with the victory, while the Blue Devils are
now 0-1 with the loss. The game was the home and season opener for
CCSU, and played on Arute Field as a new soccer field is currently
under construction at CCSU.
Central returns to action on Sunday, playing on the road at Boston
College beginning at 1 p.m. They will play again at home on
Tuesday night hosting Holy Cross beginning at 5 p.m. on Arute
Field.
