Long Island scored under two minutes into the match as the
Central Connecticut women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to
top seed Long Island on Friday in the Northeast Conference
Tournament semifinals. The match was played at Fairleigh Dickinson
University. The loss ends the season for the Blue Devils, with an
overall mark of 9-9-2.
Long Island scored first just 1:29 into the game to take a 1-0
lead. Tonu Smith took a cross from Katie Egan from the right side
of the field and headed it by Central keeper Nikola
Deiter for the one goal lead.
Central held a 9-5 edge in shots on goal in the match. Both teams
managed a pair of shots on goal. Long Island freshman goalkeeper
Jessica Sexton made a pair of saves to record the shutout win.
Long Island moves on to face the winner of the Quinnipiac-St.
Francis (PA), which begins at 2:30 p.m.
Deiter finished the game with one save for the Blue Devils.
Following the goal in the opening minutes of the game the Blue
Devils allowed just one additional shot on Deiter.
Central advanced to the NEC Tournament for the ninth straight
season, the longest current active streak in the league. They
finished the NEC season with a 5-3-2 record, earning the fourth
seed. The loss was just the fifth all-time in the NEC Tournament
for the Blue Devils. They have won seven NEC titles during their
time in the league.
