Sanjurjo Breaks School Record at URI Invitational
Sophomore Amy Sanjurjo broke the nine
year old school record in the long jump as the Central Connecticut
State University women's track and field team competed at the URI
Invitational on Saturday. Sanjurjo's jump of 18 feet 1.5 inches
placed her third in the meet. The Blue Devils' previous best was
17' 1.5" by Nicole Dumpson in 2001.
Sanjurjo also had success on the track Saturday, placing fifth in
the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.38 seconds. Sophomore Kate
McGuire had the other top individual finish on the track for
CCSU. She placed sixth in the 500 meters, recording a time of
1:19.80.
McGuire was joined by freshmen Dara Edge and Rachel Dombroski, as
well as sophomore Katrina Ainsworth, on
Central's 4x400 meter relay team. The squad placed fifth, crossing
the line in 4:11.16.
To go along with Sanjurjo's new record, sophomores Amanda
Kelley and Amanda Prescott also put
forth top performances in the field on Saturday. Kelley took third
and fifth in two throwing events. She placed third in the shot
put, recording a mark of 40' 1.5", and took fifth in the weight
throw with a distance of 51'3". Prescott did her damage in the
triple jump, placing sixth with a jump of 34'5.5".
The Blue Devils will next head to the Boston Indoor Games on
Friday, January 29 for the all day event.
