Hughes Wins Yale Spring Opener as Blue Devils Place Second
Junior Justin Hughes won individual medalist honors, shooting rounds of 71 and 70, but the Central Connecticut men's golf team finished one strok back of the host Bulldogs to place second at the Yale Spring Opener on Saturday. Hughes defeated all 63 other competitors, as he finished in a three over par 141 for the two round tournament held at the Yale Golf Course in New Haven, CT.
The Blue Devils topped third place Harvard by nine strokes and fourth place Sacred Heart by 16 strokes over the course of Saturday's play. Hughes held a two stroke advantage over Yale's Carson Weinand and Sacred Heart's Josh Salah, who tied for second with a total score of 143.
CCSU's Greg Beloin was next on the leaderboard as rounds of 75 and an even par 69 tied the sophomore for fourth place with a total score of 144. Freshman Dan Fanion tied for 13th place after equal rounds of 74 gave him a total of 148 for the tournament.
Sophomore Kevin Josephson and junior Eric Hawerchuk rounded out the Central Connecticut golfers on Saturday. The former tied for 19th place after rounds of 77 and 73, while that latter put forth rounds of 77 and 80 to tie for 41st with a total of 157.
The Blue Devils will next compete in the New England Championships at the Triggs Memorial Golf Course in Providence Rhode Island. The tournament will take place on April 9 and 10.
