Hughes and Fanion Named to All-NEC Team
A pair of Central Connecticut men's golfers were named All-Northeast Conference selections by the league office this afternoon. Junior Justin Hughes and freshman Dan Fanion both received second team accolades for their achievements during the 2009-10 season.
Hughes, who returned to action this spring after missing the entirety of last year, earned his first all-conference honor. The junior led the Blue Devils with a stroke average of 75.33 in 12 rounds of play. Hughes's season was highlighted by medalist honors at the Yale Spring Opener. He won the event, shooting a three over par 141 for the two rounds of action and was named NEC Golfer of the Week for the accomplishment. Hughes also tied for 10th at the St. Thomas Aquinas Invitational and tied for 11th at the New England Division One Championships.
Fanion received the all-league accolades in his first year of competition after recording an average of 75.89 over 27 rounds of play. The freshman was named NEC Golfer of the week twice this season. Fanion recorded four top 10 finishes, including his one under par 143 that tied him for third at the St. Thomas Aquinas Invitational. He also tied for sixth at the MacDonald Cup, tied for seventh at the Rutgers Invitational and tied for 10th at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate.
Hughes and Fanion helped lead CCSU to a fifth place finish at this year's Northeast Conference Championships. Bryant's Jason Thresher earned NEC Golfer of the Year accolades, while Sacred Heart's Josh Salah was named Rookie of the Year by the conference.
