The Central Connecticut men's golf team competed in day one action of the Northeast Collegiate Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Devils are in seventh place out of 11 teams after the first 18 holes at the Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth, RI. Sophomore Kevin Josephson is tied for 12th with a 77 first round.
Central recorded a team score of 315 on the par 71 course and are 14 strokes ahead of eighth place Long Island. The Blue Devils are two strokes behind sixth place Siena and 13 behind host Rhode Island. The Rams lead the way with a first round total of 302.
Josephson is five strokes back of URI's Taylor Fontaine who led the way with a one over par 72 on Saturday. The Blue Devil sophomore shot 39 on the front nine and 38 on the back in Central's final tournament before the NEC Championships.
Juniors Justin Hughes and Eric Hawerchuk are tied for 19th and 26th place after round one action, respectively. The former carded a 78 including a 37 on the back nine, while the latter is one stroke back after scoring 79 (40-39) on Saturday.
Freshman Dan Fanion finished the first round in 81 (40-41) and is currently tied for 37th. Sophomore Greg Beloin rounded out the CCSU golfers, carding an 85 (45-40) in the first day of the tournament. He is tied for 46th going into tomorrow's final day.
