The Central Connecticut women's basketball team fell on the road at #6 West Virginia on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils trailed the Mountaineers 23-20 at the break but West Virginia pulled away in the second half for a 63-37 victory. The Blue Devils were led by 11 points from senior Kerrianne Dugan and eight rebounds from senior Leanne Crockett. The Blue Devils fall to 7-5 in their final non-conference game of the season.
The Mountaineers started the game on an 8-0 run, but the Blue Devils battled back scoring 10 points in a five minute stretch to pull within six points. Dugan hit a pair of free throws with 1:46 left in the period to pull the Blue Devils to 22-18.
On their next possession a West Virginia foul shot pushed the Mountaineers ahead by five, but with 49 second left in the period sophomore Kirsten Daamen hit a 15 foot jumper from the corner to pull the Blue Devils to within three.
With only seconds left in the half junior Alexzandria Dowdy swatted the ball away from West Virginia guard Sarah Miles. The loose ball was picked up by Crockett who launched a shot from half court with the chance to send the Blue Devils into the break tied at 23, but the shot rimmed out and the Blue Devils ended the half down by three.
The Blue Devils continued to hang close with the Mountaineers in the second-half. Freshman Jessica Babe hit a lay-up with 11 minutes left in the game to bring Central to 40-32, but following that basket West Virginia tightened up its defense. The Mountaineer's held the Blue Devils scorelss for the next 10 minutes, before senior Justina Udenze and and Crockett hit shots to pull Central to 63-37.
Dowdy had three assists and three steals for the Blue Devils, while Daamen had four blocks, her fourth straight game posting a number that of at least four.
The Blue Devils return to conference action Saturday when the host Northeast Conference Preseason favorite Long Island starting at 1 p.m.
