The Central Connecticut women's basketball team defeated Monmouth 48-45 on Monday night. The win puts the Blue Devils at 4-4 in NEC play and improves their overall record to 11-7 on the season. Junior Gabrielle Oglesby scored a game-high 14 points on 6-11 shooting.
The Blue Devils and Hawks played defensive basketball in a game which saw eight lead changes and five tie scores. In the first the lead changed three times and was tied twice, and the Blue Devils went to the break trailing 25-23. Senior Leanne Crockett and Oglesby each scored six points in the first half, and sophomore Kirsten Daamen dropped in four points while grabbing three rebounds.
Central took the lead on a jumper by senior Justina Udenze with 10:33 left in the game. The Blue Devils fought off several scoring runs by the Hawks, including a defensive stop by freshman Jessica Babe with under 10 seconds left in the game. After a Monmouth foul, Crockett went to the free throw line and knocked down the front end to put the Blue Devils ahead 48-45.
Oglesby scored eight of her game-high 14 points in the second half, and Crockett grabbed four of her game-high seven rebounds after the break. Babe had a game-high three steals, including one on the final Monmouth possession of the game.
The win brings the Blue Devils to 4-4 in conference play. The Blue Devils next four games are against Wagner, Mount St. Mary's, St. Francis (PA), and Robert Morris whom they only play once this season.
Central hosts Wagner College on Saturday, tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
