The Central Connecticut women's basketball team defeated Sacred Heart for the third straight time on Monday night. The Blue Devils earned their second consecutive victory in the William H. Pitt Center, 65-62. Junior Gabrielle Oglesby had a game-high 16 points including 12 of the Blue Devils final 14 points in the game. The Blue Devils are now 9-7 on the season and improve to 2-4 in Northeast Conference action.
The Blue Devils and Pioneers traded baskets in the first half with Central ending the period ahead 31-29. Junior Alexzandria Dowdy led the way in the first for the Blue Devils hitting on a pair of long threes and adding a lay up on a fast break after making a steal. Junior Rachel Chandler came off the bench to hit a pair of clutch three pointers. As the Blue Devils combined to shot 40.0% from behind the arc in the period.
In the second half the Blue Devils traded to fight off the Pioneers offense. The score was 51-45 with just over nine minutes left to play and Oglesby took over. The junior forward scored Central's next nine points to keep the Blue Devils ahead 62-60. Dowdy and Oglesby each added a free throw to push the lead to 64-60.
Following a Pioneer basket, senior Leanne Crockett stepped to the line with a chance to put the game out of reach. After missing the first, Crockett hit the second shot putting the Blue devils ahead 65-62.
Sacred Heart brought the ball up the court and launched a long three at the buzzer to tie the game. The shot went in but was waved off by the officials.
The Blue Devils pulled out the 65-62 victory, with a game-high 16 points from Oglesby. Dowdy added 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Crockett dominated the boards pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds, eight points, four assists, two blocks and two steals.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday when they host Fairleigh Dickinson at 1 p.m.
