Lewis, Farrell, Patrick Tally Career-Highs In Tight Loss At Chicago State

The Central Connecticut women's basketball team fell just short Thursday night at NEC foe Chicago State. 

Kiyah Lewis scored a career-high 28 for the Blue Devils. The rookie was perfect in the third quarter, hitting 5-5 from the field, with a three-pointer and 2-2 at the line, as she scored 13 of the teams 23 points in that period. 

Jessica Farrell also had a career-high, dishing out nine assists on Thursday.

KEY MOMENTS  

• Kiyah Lewis scored 15 seconds into the game, and scored the and-one, as the Blue Devils scored the first five points of the contest. That game opening run extended to 9-2 on back-to-back layups from Nicora Patrick, 3:06 into the game. 

• A putback from Lucia Noin with 3:44 to play in the first quarter gave Central a 16-11 advantage. The Cougars scored five straight points, to knot the score 16-16 at the 2:09 mark. Jessica Farrell wasted little time putting the Blue Devils back on top, scoring a jumper 10 seconds later. A Cierra Pearson steal led to a Noin hoop with 38 seconds left and a 20-16 edge at the end of the quarter. 

• Pearson started the second quarter scoring, pushing the Blue Devils lead to 22-16, 58 seconds into the period. The Cougars scored the next 12 points, in a 4:23 stretch to take a 28-22 advantage. A Patrick hook shot at the 3:20 mark ended the Blue Devils drought and after a Cougars a Lewis free throw followed by two free throws from Mia Toure had the Blue Devils within three with 1:49 to play before intermission. A Pearson free throw with 41 seconds left closed the Blue Devils within a pair, 32-30, but four straight Cougar points int he final 17 seconds took Chicago State to the locker room with a 36-30 advantage. 

• The Cougars extended their lead to 39-32 96 seconds into the third quarter. The Blue Devils rallied, with the next seven points to draw square, 39=39 on a Lewis conventional three-point play with 6:20 to play in the period. 

• After a Brianna Hill free throw at the 6:06 mark temporarily stymied the run, Lewis scored three the old-fashioned way off the Hill missed free throw to put Central ahead 42-40. After Hill scored in the paint, Lewis scored four consecutive points to give Central a 46-42 edge, before the Cougars again rallied to tie up the score, 46-46. 

• With the score knotted 48-48 with 1:49 left in the quarter, Lewis knocked down a triple with 83 seconds left and a Patrick basket put Central top 53-50 entering the final period. 

• Chicago State scored the first five points of the final quarter, to take a 55-53 advantage, 98 seconds into the period. Lewis converted a second-chance hoop at 7:41 to draw Central back level, 55-55. A Person free throw with 7:21 to play gave the Blue Devils the lead, 56-55, for the final time.  

• Chicago State scored six unanswered to take a 61-56 advantage with 6:06 to play. The Blue Devils four times, the last on a Farrell driving layup with 55 seconds left to close within 68-66. The Cougars were good on all five of their free throw chances in the closing possessions to secure the victory.

• Patrick tallied a career-best 14 points, shooting 5-9 from the field in her second career start 

• Lewis finished the day 10-21 from the field and 6-7 from the free throw line 

• The Blue Devils shot 44.6 percent from the field, the second-best single-game effort of the year 

• Chicago State had a 21-11 advantage in offensive rebounds, resulting in a 24-11 edge in second chance points 

• The Blue Devils scored 42 points in the paint 

• Pearson finished with five steals and eight points 

• Farrell and Noin both scored eight points in the contest, before fouling out.  

• Keona McGee scored 28 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to pace the Cougars, who shot 37.3 percent as a team.  

• McGee was 14-17 from the free throw line, where Chicago State was 19-27 as a team
