Men's Track & Field Repeats As Outdoor Champions; Complete NEC Triple Crown
The Blue Devils set a championship record for total points, 235, and margin of victory, 129.5 points, in a dominating championship performance
The Central Connecticut State men's outdoor track and field team dominated the Northeast Conference Championship, winning the team crown for the second consecutive season. The Blue Devils accrued a meet record 235 points and the 129.5 point margin of victory over Stonehill, is the largest in league history. Monmouth scored 232 points, and won by 105 points, in the 2009 championship.
The Blue Devils completed the NEC triple crown with the victory, and are the NEC champions in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field.
Senior James Sullivan was named the Outstanding Track Performer – Distance, winning the 5000m and 10,000m races. Rookie Greyson Golda was named the Outstanding Field Performer – Throws for his three silver medals in the championships. Golda was also named the Rookie of the Meet.
Lucas Figueiredo ran 46.88 in the finals of the 400m, setting a school record. The prior mark, 47.0 by Ron Thompson, stood for 57 years, since 1968.
CCSU set three NEC records on Sunday, in the 3000m steeplechase, 1500m and the javelin. Eddie Nicholas edged out Yankarlos Diaz to win the steeplechase, in a time of 9:00.15. Both runners eclipsed the former NEC record, as Diaz took silver in a time of 9:00.91. Aiden Budge broke his teammates mark in winning the 1500m in 3:47.53.
Colin Winkler won gold in the javelin as he had the top-six throws of the event, setting the NEC record in his final effort, 71.98m. That throw also eclipsed Winkler's own school record, set earlier this season.
The Blue Devils 4x400 relay of Noah Colangelo, KyMoy Phillip, Jayden Brown and Lucas Figueiredo set a school record with a run of 3:11.29 and won gold.
The Blue Devils return to action at the New England Championships, May 9-10 at UMass.
FINALS
- The Blue Devils earned 20 points in the javelin, with Alex Herron capturing bronze with a 54.02m effort and Kyle Martin (48.20m) and Zachary Bonini (47.10m) earning seventh and eighth respectively
- Figuieredo won the 400m with a 46.88 time, while Colangelo (47.40) and Philip (48.21) placed fourth and fifth
- James Sullivan won his second gold medal of the meet, taking the lead with 400m to run and pulling away to capture the crown at 14:34.57
- Brendan Mellitt (14:57.88) was fifth in the 5000, with Eddie Nicholas (15:04.98) sixth and Chris Abbey (15:16.82) finished eighth
- Budge took second in the 800m, running 1:53.58
- Stylz Mitchell claimed silver in the 100m, running 1.54, while Tristan Burke earned two points in seventh place 10.94
- Greyson Golda earned a third silver medal, throwing 47.87m in the discus
- Joseph Lauria (9:39.84) was fourth for CCSU in the steeplechase, with Caleb Cerra (10:12.29) eighth, as the Blue Devils picked up 24 points in the event
- Maxwell Czarnecki ran 55.00 to claim the 400m hurdles bronze medal, with Kenny Agwu fourth in a run of 55.37
- Jamar Alcena, Tristan Burke, Jordan Jackson and Mitchell ran 41.36 to earn bronze in the 4x100 relay
- Noah Colangelo (21.48) took bronze in the 200m as the Blue Devils earned 10 points with KyMoy Phillip (21.77) finishing sixth and Tristan Burke (22.60) finishing eighth
- John Slavinsky cleared 3.45m in the pole vault, earning three points for his sixth place finish
- Willie Elliott jumped 13.51m in his final triple jump effort, to finish eighth and earn a point
